Star Wars' John Boyega Says He's Had Talks With Marvel

It's no secret that the world is pretty Star Wars crazy right about now. Following the prequels' conclusion, there was a long hiatus void of silver screen content. And with Disney now in charge of the property, we should expect new and exciting Star Wars movies every year or so for the foreseeable future. Actor John Boyega is one of the stars of the current trilogy, and recently expanded his influence in the business by producing and starring in Pacific Rim Uprising. Some fans have also been calling for him to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering Episode IX will likely be his last appearance as Finn. Now it looks like he's actually had talks with the behemoth studio.

This exciting news comes to us from John Boyega's recent appearance Awesome Con in Washington, D.C.. During his Q&A with the audience, he was reportedly asked about taking on the mantle of Blade in the MCU. While that seems like a great fit for the actor, he actually revealed he'd never take the role from actor Wesley Snipes. But he has had some meetings with the MCU about potentially joining-- just not anytime soon.

John Boyega's comments (via Bounding Into Comics) are enough to make any self respecting cinephile or nerd giddy with excitement. Fans are eager to see the same faces across multiple sci-fi platforms, like how both Josh Brolin and Chris Evans have played multiple comic book characters. Getting a Star Wars lead into the MCU would be a great way for the fans to keep up with Boyega, and watch him kick more ass in the future.

Considering the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it certainly doesn't seem out of the question for John Boyega to take a role in the not too distant future. Avengers 4 will end Phase Three, and will bring the MCU as we know it to a close. Many of the cinematic universe's leading actors are coming to the end of their contracts, and it seems like just about any hero could be killed off in the next two Avengers movies. Some new characters are going to be needed to fill in the ranks, and Boyega would be a major win.

As for which character John Boyega could play, there seems to be a variety of different choices now that the shared universe is embracing both cosmic and magic stories. That being said, fans aren't likely going to let go the idea of John Boyega playing Blade. Since Doctor Strange opened up the MCU to more magical elements, it's about time that vampire hero joined the shared universe. Then again, many fans (including Boyega himself) are hoping that Wesley Snipes returns to the role if/when it's brought back to theaters.

Netflix Is Making Its Own Superhero Movie, And It Wants Keanu Reeves

Netflix's mission for world domination continues. The streaming service is trying to put out 80 movies this year, and has already released a few high profile projects, in addition to getting development underway on several more. One of these projects is a superhero movie that Netflix is recruiting some interesting talent for. The film is said to be an original vigilante superhero story and while Netflix has reportedly signed on a director, they are hoping to sign none other than Keanu Reeves for the main role.

According to Deadline, Netflix has ordered Past Midnight, a "new type" of vigilante superhero story. The film was written by T.J. Fixman and will be directed by Dope director Rick Famuyiwa. The hope is that Keanu Reeves will star in the movie, but there's no indication in the report that negotiations have started. As long as this doesn't distract Reeves from John Wick 3, then we're all for it.

The last time Reeves played a superhero was in the critically panned Constantine, but Reeves has gotten a lot of goodwill back thanks to the John Wick movies. Plot details for Past Midnight are being kept under wraps at the moment.

Writer T.J. Fixman predominately comes from the video game world. He's written a bunch of the Ratchet and Clank games, but he's also sold a number of film projects like One Night on the Hudson, The Lost, and Disney's Gargoyles.

Rick Famuyiwa is a name that should sound familiar to those who follow superhero movie news. Famuyiwa was this close to directing the Flash movie for Warner Bros., before creative differences drove them apart. Past Midnight will be his second chance at tackling the superhero genre, but he isn't the only big superhero name attached to the project. Joe and Anthony Russo, who have been busy making a tiny film called Avengers: Infinity War, are on board as producers of Past Midnight. Some seriously big gets for Netflix.

There's no suggested release date for Past Midnight, but it's definitely an intriguing project. Netflix -- for good or bad -- is continuing to be a growing hub for filmmakers looking for fewer boundaries than they would ordinarily get from a standard studio. While not every movie Netflix releases is a smash-hit (it tends to be more okay to bad), Past Midnight has enough talent to warrant some bubbling excitement.

Why Thanos Will Be More Interesting Than Other MCU Villains, According To Infinity Wars Writers

Needless to say, there will be spoilers in this article, so stop reading now if you want to go into Avengers: Infinity War knowing nothing.

He is the "Big Bad" of Avengers: Infinity War (and possibly Avengers 4... we still don't know for sure). And Marvel Studios has been teasing his arrival for years. But Thanos (Josh Brolin), the Mad Titan, has really only been shown as a ruler on a throne, or a giant purple dude who has a Gauntlet in storage, and plans on "doing" something himself. Hardly intimidating. So when CinemaBlend traveled to Atlanta to visit the set of Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War, we asked screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely how they plan to help Thanos stand out from previous villains in the MCU, and they told us:

Christopher Markus: Well, part of it is motivation, where if you have a villain who just wants to kill somebody or just wants to take over the world because it seems like a fun thing to do... that guy isn't very interesting. He's pathetic. But, we take this from [Thanos creator Jim] Starlin. Thanos is an amoral philosopher. He's not the Devil -- although he does sometimes have the Devil standing next to him. We wanted that all the way through. To have a villain with understandable motivations and emotions. Thanos has family. Thanos has two daughters that we know of. Thanos has 8 million back stories in the comics but they're all kind of sad.Stephen McFeely: What I want to point out, is that my favorite two [villains] in the entire MCU are Loki and Kilgrave, because he's creepy and awful, but really cares in a strange way.

The screenwriters went on to elaborate that they like the fact that some characters in the MCU who are painted as villains don't really SEE themselves as evil. They have a point to make, and it sets them at odds with the heroes, but they understand their motivations, and they think they are right. This sounds a bit like Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) from Black Panther. And it will establish a thread for Thanos. Stephen McFeely continued:

Chris [Markus] is right, they both have these weird family relationships. So Thanos will get the benefit of both of those things. He's got daughters that he clearly has to deal with, and James [Starlin] did a nice job of setting the table for us, but we're certainly going to run with that. And screen time. This is not an origin story. Very often, in the screen writing weeds, we're trying to get a character up and off the ground, and so the bad guy tends to be a foil for the development of the hero, and that's not the case here. If anything, it's the opposite. Our heroes are foils for the villain, whose story we need to tell at large.

In the process, they also wanted to create an actual character, and not just an empty threat. Stephen McFeely summarized:

One of the big challenges is how to make sure he's not just a relentless machine collecting stones like he's going shopping. So we want to give him a full, weighted emotional story. You can kind of say this is Thanos' origin story, so that he will get the weight of any of the previous heroes in terms of the decisions he has to make in order to get what he wants.

And from the looks of these trailers, they certainly are telling Thanos' story on a large scale.
