How Bumblebee Almost Featured Megatron

How Bumblebee Almost Featured Megatron

When Bumblebee director Travis Knight approached the Transformers spinoff, he looked to his childhood with the popular toys the films are based on. Transformers were first introduced in the '80s and had a G1 design that has morphed quite a bit through the years.

Travis Knight originally wanted to include G1 Megatron in a rare scene in the franchise that shows the fall of Cybertron, and it sounds like it was going to be awesome. Here's what he said in an interview with io9:

I had this whole thing boarded where we're where we see [Decepticon leader] Megatron and he comes in like Sauron, just blowing shit up and laying waste to everything.

...then he realized that to keep the continuity of the Transformers franchise, there's no way Megatron could be on Cybertron in the '80s. In the first film, Captain Witwicky finds Megatron in the Arctic Circle back in 1897. The Decepticon leader is then transferred to Sector 7 by the '30s, where he continues to chill until the events of 2007's Transformers.

Sometimes a vision just doesn't match what can be done, even though an appearance of G1 Megatron on Cybertron would have been quite the site for any fan to geek out over. When Bumblebee director Travis Knight approached the Transformers spinoff, he looked to his childhood with the popular toys the films are based on.

Although Travis Knight's Megatron idea would have been fun to see on screen, perhaps the absence of the Decepticon can lead the way for the film to differentiate itself from the Transformers franchise. Megatron was featured in a majority of the films, including in 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight.

Transformers were first introduced in the '80s and had a G1 design that changed endless times throughout the years. Travis Knight said when he first pitched using an earlier aesthetic of Transformers there was some pushback from Paramount, the producers, and Hasbro. But they ultimately ended up coming around to the idea.

Bumblebee offers quite a bit of nostalgia for the era it is set in too. One of the most iconic films of its decade, E.T. had a huge influence on the development of the story, as pitched by Steven Spielberg himself who is also an executive producer on the film.

Travis Knight's classic approach to his Transformers film seems to have paid off as the film has received positive praise from critics prior to its release. The film currently has a staggering 95% Tomatometer score, hovering over the praise of releases including Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns. Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Dylan O'Brien, Justin Theroux and Angela Bassett and comes to theaters December 21.

Joseph Mazzello, who played Tim in the film, found this out the hard way when he was injured by a dinosaur on set, as he explained: What Joseph Mazzello is describing is part of the memorable kitchen scene where one of the raptors chases Tim into the freezer, and he and Lex manage to lock it inside.

Michael B. Jordan Had A Secret Role In A Summer Movie And No One Found Out About It

By  at April 02, 2021  , , ,  No comments
Michael B. Jordan Had A Secret Role In A Summer Movie And No One Found Out About It

When you have an actor who is as high profile as Michael B. Jordan making a cameo in a big budget movie, the secret will often leak out at some point. Yet when Jordan played a small, but integral role in this summer's Kin, the secret was so safe that many people still don't know the actor was in the movie. The story of why the cameo was kept secret, and what it meant for Kin, can be seen in the exclusive special features clip below:

While Michael B. Jordan's name can be found in Kin's credits as one of the film's producers, not even that fact lead to someone stumbling upon the fact that he plays the "male Cleaner" in the film. It's even wilder that both Cleaner characters are prominently featured in the film's marketing campaign. Though in that respect, it does help the characters are wearing tinted helmets.

The fact that Kin didn't lean heavy on Michael B. Jordan's secret role is a bit of a shock considering the actor is a big name in Hollywood right now. It's even more surprising considering the film is a proposed start to a new series of films. Considering Jordan's "Cleaner" character reveals a twist to the narrative once he is introduced in the film's third act, I'm a little surprised the flick didn't sell the actor's inclusion. This isn't the first time this has happened this year, however, as Deadpool 2 notably didn't sell the fact that Matt Damon appeared in the flick heavily in costume earlier this year. That news only came out after the movie's release.

So how did Michael B. Jordan's big Kin role stay secret for so long? Well, the film's writers / directors Jonathan and Josh Baker seem to confirm in the video above that it all came down to just consciously leaving that big reveal out of the trailers.

Rather than telegraphing Kin's total complement of surprises and story beats, the trailers just sell a story involving two adopted brothers, played by Myles Truitt and Jack Reynor, on the run from the presumably villainous "Cleaners." That's not the only surprise the film's marketing hid from its potential audience, as Kin is a film that i surprisingly dark when compared to how the movie was advertised initially.

Michael B. Jordan's role in Kin isn't substantial in terms of his screen time. However, if a franchise or spinoff ever comes down the pipeline, Jordan's Cleaner, and the exposition he drops in the film's third act, are the keys to making it happen. The fact this special features is now being released to the public with Kin's Home Entertainment release makes me more intrigued than ever to see where a potential follow-up could go, should it ever happen.

If you're now curious to see how this twist pans out, or if you're just excited to see some more Michael B. Jordan action, you can check out Kin as it arrives on digital HD tomorrow. Physical media releases will follow later this month. In fact, the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release for the film is scheduled for November 20th, but you can pre-order a copy now.

What Will This PG-13 Deadpool Movie Actually Be?

What Will This PG-13 Deadpool Movie Actually Be?

Going into 2018, it looked like this would be the biggest year yet for the X-Men franchise, as three mutant-centric movies were scheduled for release. But within months, Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants were pushed back to 2019, leaving only Deadpool 2 to entertain audiences. And the Merc with the Mouth certainly delivered on that front, earning positive critical reception like its predecessor and making over $734 million worldwide. After Deadpool 2 had its theatrical run and was released on home media (both the theatrical version and the Super Duper Cut), naturally it was assumed that Wade Wilson's time on the silver screen this year was done, but word came in last week that a PG-13 Deadpool movie is arriving in December, leading fans everywhere to utter a collective, "Wait... what?"

Let's backtrack a little bit. Last week, Ryan Reynolds posted the below picture on social media, showing Deadpool in all his costumed glory reading to an adult Fred Savage in his oddly juvenile bedroom.

The scene is clearly a parody of Fred Savage being read to as a kid by Peter Falk in The Princess Bride, and if you look closely, you'll see that one of the pages shows Juggernaut ripping Deadpool in half. Reynolds didn't provide any context for his post, but minutes later, word came in that 20th Century Fox had scheduled an untitled Deadpool movie for December 21. Officially, that's all Fox is willing to say, but it was subsequently reported that this will be a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2, which is an unusual idea since Ryan Reynolds' version of the character is right at home in the R-rated realm. Days later, word came in that this Deadpool movie is supposedly called The Deadpool Before Christmas, suggesting there will be a holiday feel to this presentation.

Until Fox provides more details, we can't say with 100% certainty what this December Deadpool movie is. But working off the available information, it appears that the studio decided to give Deadpool 2 a little extra time in theaters and make it a little more family-friendly. Now that by itself isn't enough to warrant being called The Deadpool Before Christmas, so either some extra scenes have been thrown in that have a holiday-bent, or we're actually getting cutaway gags of Deadpool reading to Fred Savage Princess Bride-style. Remember when Peter Falk told the young Fred that he'd skip over the scarier parts of the story? This is Deadpool's excuse to follow suit and skip over the gorier and raunchier parts of his sequel adventure.

On the one hand, the opportunity to see Ryan Reynolds riff with Fred Savage is almost enough to get me to see Deadpool 2 in theaters again, and I already own a copy of the movie. And sure, this would allow the young'uns to catch a movie that they'd normally only get to watch on the big screen if there was an adult accompanying them or if they snuck in (c'mon, we all know this still happens). Nevertheless, I still can't help wondering why Fox decided to do this. First off, it's not like Deadpool 2 was commercially unsuccessful. Yes, it made a little under $50 million than Deadpool did, but sequels don't always outperform their predecessors, and Deadpool 2 was unquestionably still profitable.

Plus, the weekend of December 21 is already incredibly crowded. Even with Alita: Battle Angel moving to February 14, 2019, we still have Aquaman, Bumblebee, Welcome to Marwen, Holmes & Watson and Cold War all coming out as well, not to mention Mary Poppins Returns arriving two days earlier and movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Mortal Engines still catching eyes. Admittedly, releasing a Christmas-themed Deadpool 2 wouldn't work if it came out after Christmas, but there are only so many people who will want to check this out when there are so many movies that haven't already had their time in theaters available.

Most importantly, why give us a PG-13 cut of an existing Deadpool movie when these Ryan Reynolds-led stories works so well within that R rating? It is possible to give kids their own version of Deadpool to enjoy, as the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series proved, but needless to say, the current Deadpool movies are in no way meant for children. They thrive in getting to be super violent, utter profanity left and right and toss around innuendos. And, of course, break the fourth wall, although that trope knows no age limit. Which leads me to wonder if this is Fox testing the waters for what's to come with a certain Mouse House.

As most of you reading already know, Disney bought 20th Century Fox, which means that eventually the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties will absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney CEO Bob Iger said last year that there might be an opportunity to create an R-rated Marvel brand so that Deadpool's current adult-oriented schtick wouldn't be affected, but what if this PG-13 Deadpool 2 is a way to gauge audience interest in Deadpool movies that better fit within the MCU. Opinions will vary on if this a good idea, but if this is indeed the reason for the re-release, it's an interesting approach. Regardless, this December Deadpool movie is coming, so if you're a fan of the character and looking to see his take on holiday cheer, then you'll have the opportunity to do so just days before Santa Claus comes crawling down the chimney. And rest assured, as more information comes in about the Merc with the Mouth's winter theatrical appearance, we'll let you know.

As things now, aside from this December Deadpool movie, the Merc with the Mouth is expected to return with Cable and Domino in the Drew Goddard-helmed X-Force. There is also a Deadpool 3 in development, although who knows if that can move forward before the Disney/Fox deal goes into effect. You can check out our X-Men movies guide to learn what other projects are being worked on for the franchise.
