The Fast And Furious Franchise Has Fired Its Longtime Producer

Ever since the Fast and Furious franchise launched in 2001, Neal H. Moritz has been working on it as a producer, but that nearly two decade-long tenure has come to an abrupt end. Rather than Moritz deciding to leave the car and explosion-filled series of movies on his own terms, hes been fired due to a legal dispute with Universal Pictures.

Last October, it was reported that Neal Moritz filed a lawsuit against Universal, alleging that the studio was in breach of oral contract and committed promissory fraud when it removed him as the lead producer on the upcoming Fast and Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. He demanded he be reinstated as lead producer or be paid tens of millions of dollars in damages in lost compensation.

Seven months later, the news has come out that not only has Neal Moritz been dropped from Hobbs and Shaw, but hes also been removed from all future Fast and Furious movies, starting with Fast and Furious 9, which begins shooting in a few weeks. Because Moritz has a pay-or-play deal, Universal will still need to compensate on the Fast and Furious movies, but evidently thats a better course of action than keeping him around, both financially and mentally.

Universals stance is that Neal Moritz is not entitled to be a producer on Hobbs and Shaw, while Moritz says he had an oral agreement with the studios president, Jimmy Horowitz, to produce the spinoff and was working on it up until he was dropped from it right before principal photography kicked off. Moritz also claims that he came up with the idea for Hobbs and Shaw with screenwriter Chris Morgan and spent months developing it.

So where did everything go wrong? According to a studio insider who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, Universal tried to work out a deal with Neal Moritz, but due to a a long, torturous history with fighting him on every previous Fast and Furious movie, the studio got sick of his combative behavior.

Because Universal is trying to expand the Fast and Furious franchise into more of a cinematic universe, as well as Hobbs and Shaws budget growing before production, the studio asked the franchises top talent to contribute to a pool that would allow Universal to break even before others were cut in on the profit. Dwayne The Rock Johnson was among those willing to play ball, but Moritz reportedly instead wound up for his usual game of hardball.

As for why Universal decided to kick Neal Moritz off all future Fast and Furious movies, that came about when he named Jimmy Horowitz in his lawsuit. While its unclear what the thought process that the studios bigwigs had after that, evidently there was incentive enough for them to toss Moritz out.

With Hobbs and Shaw hitting theaters this summer, two more main Fast and Furious movies on the way and a female-centric spinoff in the works, obviously this blockbuster franchise is sticking around for the foreseeable future. Still, considering how involved Neal Moritz was from the start, this definitely marks the end of an era.

Well see how the Fast and Furious franchises first foray into spinoff territory goes when Hobbs and Shaw comes out in theaters on August 2, and Fast and Furious 9 will follow on May 22, 2020.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown in the past decade, there have been so many memorable moments, it can begin to be difficult to catch when the filmmakers call back to them in the newest films. Earlier this year, Avengers: Infinity War was a rare release that promised to be a major milestone of the entire franchise, bringing together most of the Avengers with the Guardians of the Galaxy to defeat the towering Thanos as he sought to gather the Infinity Stones into his Infinity Gauntlet. One fan, who was likely re-watching Avengers: Infinity War on homed media noticed that the score playing when Tony Stark speaks to Pepper Potts on Ebony Maw's ship is the same one that plays when Steve Rogers spoke to Peggy Carter aboard Red Skull's plane in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The unforgettable and heartbreaking moment between Cap and Peggy in Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers crashed the Hydra aircraft into the iceberg had the hero demonstrating the ultimate sacrifice. The pivotal moment left Agent Carter to continue S.H.I.E.L.D. adventures of her own as Steve chilled out for 70 years or so. The brief exchange between Pepper and Tony in Avengers: Infinity War wasn't as iconic of a moment, but it's a welcome callback to The First Avenger, (via Reddit). After the puzzling ending to Infinity War, the fate of Iron Man and Pepper Potts' relationship is anyone's guess, but I have a feeling it's not the last exchange between the couple. Although The First Avenger's conclusion marked the end to Cap's chances to spend a life with Peggy, he was still able to get closure with her in subsequent films. Let's hope Pepper and Tony are afforded the same chance. Even though Captain America has been named the "first Avenger" Iron Man is the hero who started it all, as his titular film was the first MCU entry in 2008. This makes the romance between Tony and Pepper an important and iconic one. After it was revealed in Captain America: Civil War that Tony and Pepper were struggling with some conflicts, the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming surprised us with news that the couple would finally be tying the knot. With Avengers 4, we may also see Tony and Pepper become parents too, if Gwyneth Paltrow's past comments ring true.

Avengers: Infinity War additionally threw it back to Captain America: The First Avenger when the Red Skull showed up for a brief moment. Also, in Captain America: Civil War, Steve Roger's first movie was also referenced during the fight between Iron Man and Captain America. In the scene, Captain America repeats the line "I can do this all day" that he said prior to getting an upgrade and becoming a hero, showing an emotional parallel to Cap's journey. As Avengers 4 approaches on May 3, 2019, more revisits to the Avengers: Infinity Wars are sure to arise as fans look for clues about what's next for the beloved heroes.





Though we don't get to see it in action, we're pretty sure we did catch a glimpse of it, and there's no doubt we'll get some pretty cool visuals of Captain America using his new shield, whatever form it takes, in Avengers: Infinity War.

This weekend, moviegoers will have the opportunity to see John Boyega co-pilot a giant robot and fight equally large monsters as Jake Pentecost in Pacific Rim Uprising, but it was only a couple months ago that we saw the actor reprising Finn for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Just like how we had to wait two years between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, it won't be until the final month of 2019 that we see Boyega and his Star Wars costars return for Episode 9, but Boyega is already planning his work-out regiment, as he thinks the tale will packed with even more conflict than the previous installments he's been in. Boyega explained:

Next for me, filming wise, is Star Wars: Episode IX in July. They've officially given us a note to start training soon. I'm going to take a holiday before that. I think that, regardless of where the story goes -- and I haven't read it, by the way -- I think it's going to be all out war. So I know that I'm going to have to work out and strengthen for that part.

Even with Pacific Rim Uprising finally arriving in theaters, John Boyega is keeping busy. As he recently told CinemaBlend ahead of his upcoming appearance at Awesome Con in Washington D.C., while he will be taking a vacation soon to recharge the ol' batteries, he'll still need to begin bulking up soon for Star Wars: Episode IX. With Episode 9 being moved from May of 2019 to December of the same year, principal photography is scheduled to begin this summer, but for Boyega (and no doubt many of the other actors), he'll need to ensure he's in proper shape before the cameras start rolling. We're a long ways off from learning any Episode 9 plot details, but given how The Last Jedi ended, I can't say I'm shocked by Boyega saying that the final entry of this Star Wars trilogy will be "all out war."

When we left off with Finn and his allies at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, nearly all of The Resistance had been wiped out by The First Order, and the handful of survivors managed to escape from Crait on the Millennium Falcon thanks to Luke Skywalker distracting Kylo Ren with his Force projection. Even with their pitiful numbers, General Leia Organa predicted that because of Luke's sacrifice, The Resistance will rise again. It remains to be seen how much time will have passed when Episode 9 begins, but since the movie will presumably mark the end of the conflict between The Resistance and The First Order, it's a good bet that this war will go out with an especially big bang, and Finn will need to be in great shape for those final fights.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released in theaters on December 20, 2019, but if you're interested in watching John Boyega's most recent work, you can either head to the theater this weekend to see Pacific Rim Uprising, or you can watch The Last Jedi, which is now available on Digital HD and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD next Tuesday, March 27.
