Ron Howard Has An Idea For Another Willow Movie

Ron Howard Has An Idea For Another Willow Movie

Ron Howard is about to release Solo: A Star Wars Story, but it turns out Star Wars isn't the only franchise he's been meeting with Lucasfilm to discuss. 30 years ago Ron Howard directed Willow based on a story by George Lucas, and the director recently revealed that he has had conversations about potentially making a sequel to the cult classic. He even has at least the beginnings of an idea for the story, though his idea would focus on an entirely different character. According to Howard...

I don't want to give away too much, but there is a little talk of Willow. We wouldn't call it Willow 2, I think it would focus a lot on Elora Danan, although Willow would have to be significantly involved.

It makes a lot of sense. Any Willow sequel that went into production now would almost certainly need to be set decades after the original. At least if it expected to actually include the character played by Warwick Davis it would. As such, that also means that Elora Dana, the character who was as an infant in the first movie, will have grown up. Willow's plot revolved around a baby that was prophesized to defeat an evil queen, and while that has already taken place by the end of the movie, certainly anybody who did such a thing would continue to be an important person in the world. Elora Danan is the Harry Potter of her land, and she'd likely grow up with a lot of people expecting great things from her in much the same way. One also assumes that her connection to the man who saved her life would remain strong, which is why Willow as a character would remain important in a sequel.

Any serious fans of the Willow franchise know that there actually were sequels to the film already, in the form of a trilogy of novels written by Chris Claremont with George Lucas back in the 1990s. Those books did continue the story and saw Elora Danan grow up. However, it doesn't sound from what Ron Howard tells Comicbook.com that he's thinking of adapting those novels. This instead sounds like an entirely new idea, though one that simply goes in a similar direction.

It will be interesting to see what potentially comes of discussions around a Willow sequel. The original movie wasn't a massive hit, one of the reasons that theatrical sequels were never made, but it has certainly become a cult classic and as audiences have found the movie over time a strong following has built up around it, which perhaps means there are enough people interested in a sequel now that it could happen.

Long before the legendary Star Wars first came to be there was another, destined to succeed. This may sound like the start of a great epic but it is true. In 1972 George Lucas had an idea for a fantasy epic known as Willow. He even pitched the idea to director Ron Howard and had high hopes for its

Kevin Feige Reveals How Marvel Judges Movies Beyond The Box Office

Kevin Feige Reveals How Marvel Judges Movies Beyond The Box Office

When it comes to the box office, Marvel Studios films are not unlike a rampaging Hulk, generating unprecedented success to which every other franchise and studio aspires. Just this year, Black Panther landed in third place on the all-time domestic box office charts, and Avengers: Infinity War broke the opening weekend record to kick off a $2 billion run. (currently ranked fourth all time worldwide). As a result, judging the MCU purely by how titles perform financially is a given. Yet, even though Marvel Studios is a part of a publicly traded company, the bottom line is not the only way Marvel judges its success. Audience reception and a film's staying power are also important, as Kevin Feige recently explained,

Of course it's: Do people like it? Do people have an experience that they are still talking about a day later? A week later? A month later? And secretly, I've always hoped for years later. I've always thought you can't really tell an impact of a film until years have gone by. Now, years have gone by for us. Ten years since Iron Man. And the fact is that all of these characters are still... well, are more popular than they've ever been. And people want to see them again and see how they've changed, like Thor did in Ragnarok, like Iron Man has over the movies, like Captain America has. That's exciting for us.

Obviously Kevin Feige hopes that the audience likes the movies that his company is putting out, but that goes without saying, and isn't the most ambitious hurdle to clear. Beyond that, though,Feige and Marvel are looking to make films that have staying power - and doing that is much, much more difficult, and is also kind of impossible to plan for. Being relevant years later is a barometer of success that isn't readily apparent when a movie is first released. But as the producer told The Costco Connection, Marvel Studios is no longer the new kid on the block: it has been around for a decade, and its first film Iron Man still holds up, is still widely discussed, and is considered one of the most important comic book movies in history.

As noted, part of what is key to staying power is getting the audience invested in the characters and their journeys, and that is clearly what has happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now characters that were once considered to be Marvel's B-level characters (with Spider-Man and the X-Men initially the unavailable A-listers) are some of the most popular characters in pop culture. Of course, even a decade isn't long enough to truly judge how a movie will resonate long-term. Kevin Feige elaborated about his desire for Marvel movies to be relevant decades from now, like the true classics of his youth:

To me, that is a true testament. I think of the movies that I loved as a kid---like Back to the Future, like the Star Wars movies--that still feel as relevant today as they've ever been. That's the true test. It's been 30-plus, 40 years. We've got another 30 years to figure out what our impact has been. But 10 years on, it feels pretty good.

It will take a while to see if the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies become evergreen classics like Back to the Future, but people already talk about it as this generation's Star Wars, so now it's just a waiting game to see if that's true. Every filmmaker wants their movie to be a classic that holds up, but it is still cool to hear this from a company as successful as Marvel. Even though Kevin Feige knows that they have had major success so far over the past decade, there are still higher goals to which he aspires, and with the Marvel movies getting better with each Phase, they may be on their way to achieving them.

Check out our guide for everything going on and coming up in the MCU and for all the biggest movies heading to theaters this year, take a look at our release calendar.

Venom's Pre-Ticket Sales Are Beating Out Some Of The MCU's Recent Movies

Venom's Pre-Ticket Sales Are Beating Out Some Of The MCU's Recent Movies

The critical reaction towards Venom may not be great overall so far, but on the commercial side of things, the movie looks like it's going to be a powerhouse performer. Last month, it was estimated that Venom could kick off domestically in the $55-$85 million range, and as of yesterday, Eddie Brock's standalone adventure is predicted to have a global opening weekend haul of between $160-$175 million. Now word's come in that Venom is also doing quite well with regards to advance ticket sales, so much so that it's outselling recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While the above three movies weren't the heaviest of hitters in the MCU lineup, like most of their ilk, they nonetheless commercially successful, so Venom is outpacing them in pre-sales is quite the accomplishment. As if that weren't impressive enough, Atom Tickets also noted in its report that among all Marvel movies, i.e. both the Marvel Studios entries and stories made by other studios that carry the Marvel banner, Venom ranks in third place, with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther making up the top 2. Looking outside of the comic book realm, the majority of people buying Venom tickets ahead of time on Atom Tickets fall into the 18-29 age range, so clearly a lot of young'uns are itching for some big screen, symbiote-enhanced action. As for why Venom is killing it with pre-sales, Atom Tickets editorial lead Alisha Grauso noted that even though the movie has been getting mixed reviews, there's still a lot of excitement to see this newest live action take on the character and how Tom Hardy handles the role.

Although every movie aims to be both critically and commercially successful, sometimes one doesn't always lead to the other. In Venom's case, if the early reviews are any indication, it's won't go down in history as one of the best comic book movies, but on the money front, there won't be any issues. I imagine another reason a lot of folks are eager to watch Venom is to see how Eddie Brock's origin story is handled without Spider-Man being around. That, along with the other characters and plenty of action, provides numerous reasons for people to check out Venom this weekend, though it should also be noted that Venom's opening weekend competition, A Star is Born, is also doing well in pre-sales, outperforming Oscar contenders like The Big Sick, The Shape of Water, and Call Me By Your Name.

You can judge Venom for yourself starting on Friday (or even tomorrow evening, depending on where you live), but be sure to read CinemaBlend's review of the movie now. As for what else 2018 has in store, look through our release schedule to learn what else is hitting theaters before the year is over.

Putting out a few successful movies, then selling while their worth is high would be a better plan and future-proof them a bit. If they sold back to Marvel/Disney, then they could gain Disney stock that's only going to raise in value; they could also sign some sort of exclusivity deal wherein SONY makes the games based on Marvel properties.

It's still bad enough I may avoid it because of my flight to New York and the fact that I have an anime convention and some relatives I'm seeing. The reason why I'm so paranoid is because one time I had a movie I was going to see the following weekend and the next minute, it was already gone.

5 Major Questions We Have About Dark Phoenix After That Trailer

5 Major Questions We Have About Dark Phoenix After That Trailer

While the first details about the new X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, were originally released all the way back in December 2017 that was when the film was still scheduled for release in 2018. A few months later the project was bumped to next year, and it's been silent ever since - but after a long wait we finally got the first trailer earlier tonight. All together it's an interesting bit of footage, confirming the presence of key characters, showing off new uniforms, and offering first looks at the power of the titular villain, but it has also left us asking a number of questions that don't have a clear answer just yet.

After watching the trailer several times, we've singled out five major head-scratchers that we are now left to ponder - including material that we didn't see, connections to previous stories in the franchise, mysterious characters, and more. So let's dive in, shall we?

Where's All The Space Stuff?Dark Phoenix is the second adaptation of the classic X-Men story arc that we've seen in the last 12 years, but there's a very specific reason why fans have been willing to accept it. Unlike what was seen in Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand, writer/director Simon Kinberg's vision for the new film promised that audiences would get to see a big screen version of the story with all of the cosmic elements still intact. However, one of the big takeaways from the new movie is the fact that any and all space-related stuff is extremely minimal. The footage features the screenshot you see above, as well as a few shots of X-Men characters riding in the cockpit of the Blackbird, but that's really it. Instead, just about all of the material is focused on what happens to Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) after she is exposed to the Phoenix Force. Normally I'd throw out the excuse that maybe the CGI for those sequences just isn't ready for marketing yet, but you have to factor in the fact that this movie was originally supposed to be released in October. It's weird that we don't get to see more of it in the Dark Phoenix trailer, and hopefully it doesn't speak to minimal material in the finished product.

Are They Repeating Elements From X-Men: The Last Stand?Continuing sentiments from above, not only does the trailer de-emphasize the material that will see the heroes travel beyond our atmosphere, but it weirdly even seems to suggest that the film will see material from X-Men: The Last Stand carried over into Dark Phoenix (it's worth mentioning at this point that Simon Kinberg wrote the scripts for both projects). Based on dialogue we hear from Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), it definitely sounds like we will be seeing a repeat of the plot that sees Xavier secretly dampening Jean Grey's powers in order to prevent her from being too dangerous. What's interesting about this bit from the Dark Phoenix trailer is that it does continue threads from X-Men: Apocalypse - where Jean Grey demonstrated some Phoenix-esque powers - but that again just makes us more confused about the role that the heroine being exposed to the Phoenix Force in outerspace will have on the story. Thanks to the events ofX-Men: Days of Future Past, Dark Phoenix doesn't really have to have any connection to what was previously established in X-Men: The Last Stand, but it appears that the movie is still going that way anyway.

Who/What Is Jessica Chastain's Character?Admittedly this is a question that we have been asking since long before the arrival of the new Dark Phoenix trailer. That being said, actually seeing the character played by Jessica Chastain walking and talking has reinvigorated discussions and speculation about the role. We know she has long, white hair, and a passionate interest in finding Jean Grey, but beyond that she wholly remains a mystery. There have been many guesses about the character floating around, including the Shi'ar princess Lilandra, and the evil psychic entity Cassandra Nova, but sadly the Dark Phoenix trailer doesn't get us any closer to an answer. There simply isn't enough material featured to allow us to improve our already established educated guesses. Going forward it will be interesting to see if the marketing team ultimately decides to reveal that information to the audience, or if it will be kept as a big reveal only to be shown on the big screen. I was personally anticipating it as some kind of exciting button at the end of this new footage, but sadly that didn't happen. Maybe next time.

Who Are Magneto's Two New Friends?Jessica Chastain's mystery character isn't the only fresh face featured in the Dark Phoenix trailer, as there is one shot in the footage that also reveals two new, previously unannounced characters. Based on what we see in the frame above, it definitely looks like they are mutants who identify with the philosophies of Magneto (Michael Fassbender) - and what's more it looks like they may also be joined by Beast (Nicholas Hoult). It's been previously revealed that Magneto will be living a peaceful life when we next catch up with him in Dark Phoenix, specifically running a mutant commune on the island known as Genosha. He gets thrown back into the world of the X-Men when Jean Grey seeks his advice, and perhaps the two new mutants are followers who come with him as support. It would obviously be a lot easier to identify these mutants if they did literally anything in the footage, but what you see above is all we have right now.

Does Magneto's Jab At Xavier Suggest A New Approach For The Third Act?"You're always sorry, Charles. And there's always a speech." Of all the dialogue in the Dark Phoenix trailer, this bit from Magneto definitely stands out the most. The reason for this is because we have seen what's described happen many times over the course of the movie franchise's 18 year existence. When it comes right down to it, most of the action in the movies comes down to Charles Xavier doing what he can to excuse the nature of man and reason his way to a peaceful resolution. With Magneto's line in the footage, however, one wonders if it might wind up being a meta signal to fans that things in this one aren't going to wrap up the usual way. There is a great deal of uncertainty in regards to the future of the X-Men franchise, and Dark Phoenix may be the perfect project to make a sharp left turn when everyone in the world is expecting it to turn right (particularly in light of the developing Disney-Fox merger). We'll just have to wait and see how it all turns out when the film hits theaters on February 14, 2019.

A major X-Men character is going to die in Dark Phoenix, and after seeing the first trailer, we have a pretty good idea of who it will be. screenrant.com Categories
